THE STORY

THE WALLS OF SOUND is the story behind the most prolific and successful independent recording studio in history. Gold Star Recording Studios served as a “mecca” for the West Coast music scene from 1950 to 1984. Over 120 Billboard Top 40 hits and hundreds of other memorable songs were produced in this small studio on the corner of Santa Monica Blvd and Vine Street — including the #1 most frequently played song in the history of radio, The Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’.”

This unparalleled success was due to the efforts of its two owners, Stan Ross and David Gold, and their dedicated team — including Grammy Award–winning engineer Larry Levine. So it wasn’t surprising when, in 1958, a young Phil Spector came to their studio to record his first hit, “To Know Him Is to Love Him,” and never looked back. Gold’s custom-built echo chamber, combined with the genius of Spector, Ross, and Levine, brought the world the famous “Wall of Sound” recordings — and all its accompanying hits.

“Music may draw viewers in, but emotional connection is what stays with them. Each song in this film can act as a bookmark in someone’s life.”
